Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is an ambitious social welfare scheme of the Central Government. The scheme was launched by the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 1, 2016. The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana aims to provide LPG connections to the poorest women of the country, i.e. BPL families.

The main objective of this scheme is to provide cooking gas (LPG) connections to poor families. The scheme was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 1, 2016. Under this scheme, the Central Government had taken these steps to provide LPG connections to more than 5 crore women belonging to poor families below the poverty line.
Under this scheme, women get a subsidy of Rs 300. Beneficiaries under PMUY get more benefits than general beneficiaries. Currently, the price of a gas cylinder under this is Rs 550. As of March 1, 2025, 10.33 crore people out of 32.94 crore LPG consumers in India are PMUY beneficiaries.
What are the qualifications to apply for the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana?
- Women from BPL families in the SECC-2011 database are eligible
- Must have a ration card
- If you are paying income tax, you are ineligible for this scheme.
- Applicants should not have a gas connection.

How to apply for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana..?
You can apply for this scheme offline and online: If you want to apply offline, go to your nearest gas agency, fill out the form and submit. If you want to apply online, you can log in to www.pmuy.gov.in and apply for PMUY connection with the required documents. For that, you will have to follow these steps.
- For registration, first go to the official website of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana.
- Then click on the new Ujjwala connection option that appears there.
- After you click on it, the names of 3 gas agencies will appear. Choose the one you want.
- After that you will go to another new page. On that page, fill in information like your name, name of your nearest gas agency, mobile number and pin code.
- Then upload the copies of the documents asked there. Then submit the application form.
- Once all the details are in place, you can see that your application form has been successfully completed. If your application is approved, the cylinder will be delivered directly to your home.
