Ahmedabad: An Air India flight bound for London crashed shortly after take-off near Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon (June 12). The injured have been admitted to the hospital and there is panic in the area.
A thick plume of smoke was seen from the accident site, creating panic in the surrounding areas. Emergency response teams, including the fire brigade, immediately rushed to the spot. Authorities have not yet confirmed the extent of damage or casualties, and more details are expected.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was carrying 242 people, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members.
According to preliminary information, the plane crashed near Meghaninagar. The crash site is reported to be a residential area. All roads leading to the area have been closed.
Initial reports indicate that the Air India plane crashed in a densely populated area near the airport. In the moments following the accident, local residents rushed to the scene to help passengers and aid in rescue operations.
That flight, identified as Air India 171, was shown by online flight trackers as departing from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport for London's Gatwick Airport at 1:10 pm.
